Bulgaria: Death toll from fireworks warehouses blasts rises to 4
The death toll from the explosions at fireworks warehouses in Elin Pelin near Bulgaria’s capital city Sofia has risen to four.
Earlier, the deaths of Professor Petar Shishkov, 49, and his daughter Kristina Shishkova, 20, both of whom suffered extensive burn wounds in the blasts that began on July 26, were announced.
On July 28, Bulgaria’s caretaker Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov said that in the past day, a body had been found near the entrance of a warehouse. Later in the day, it was announced that the body of a fourth victim had been found.
The two bodies found this weekend have not been identified.
Investigations are continuing. The cause of the blasts is not known.
Stoyanov said that there were two eyewitnesses, including a security guard who pulled Shishkov and his daughter out of a warehouse after the explosions began.
It was still dangerous to enter the warehouses, Stoyanov said. He said that the owner of the facility was cooperating fully with the investigation.
“In my opinion, an extremely long and difficult investigation by colleagues from the prosecutor’s office and the investigation service lies ahead,” he said.
