More weather warnings for Bulgaria, after several temperature records broken

Several districts in Bulgaria are subject to the Code Orange warning of hazardous weather for July 19 because of forecast high temperatures, rain and thunder, while large parts of the rest of the country are subject to the lesser Code Yellow warning of potentially hazardous weather, also because of forecast high temperatures.

This follows several consecutive days of scorching weather in Bulgaria which saw temperature records broken in several places on July 17.

Brief showers, thunderstorms and hail are forecast for Friday and Saturday. On Friday, maximum temperatures will be between 33 and 38 deg C, followed on Saturday by maximums about one to two degrees lower.

Further rain is expected on Sunday, with mixed sunny and rainy weather at the start of next week, when temperatures will drop further and the maximum on most days will be between 27 and 32 degrees.

According to the national weather bureau, temperatures in the second half of July will remain above the climatic norms.

On July 18-20, maximum temperatures will drop by three to four degrees.

At the end of the month, most days will be sunny and hot, with an increased probability of brief showers and thunderstorms.

Places where temperature records fell on July 17 included Bulgaria’s capital city Sofia, which peaked at 38 deg C, breaking the record for July 17 set in 1974 of 32 deg C.

In Varna, the maximum temperature recorded on July 17 was 36.2 deg C, outdoing the 34.8 deg C on that day in 1938, in Shoumen the high was 38.6 deg C (the previous record was 37.6 deg C in 2007), while in Rousse, the high of 40.8 deg C on Wednesday was narrowly above the 40.5 deg C recorded on July 17 2023.

At 9pm on July 17, every city and town in Bulgaria had temperatures above 30 deg C, with the exception of Varna and Bourgas, which were in the high 20s.
