Bulgaria’s road death toll in first eight months of 2018 was 398 – Interior Ministry

The number of people who died in road accidents in Bulgaria between January 1 and August 31 2018 was 398, according to Interior Ministry statistics.

In the first eight months of 2018, there were 4386 accidents on Bulgaria’s roads. Apart from those who died, 5593 people have been injured.

In August alone, there were 634 accidents, leaving 77 people dead and 801 injured.

The figure for August includes the bus crash on the Svoge – Sofia road, which left 17 people dead and 21 injured. The death toll in the Svoge accident was the highest in a bus crash in Bulgaria for more than a decade.

The Interior Ministry said that the number of road deaths in the first eight months of 2018 was 18 lower than in the first eight months of 2017.

Bulgaria had the second-highest road fatality rate in the European Union in 2017, after Romania. Previously, Bulgaria had the highest road fatality rate in the EU.
