Judge in Bulgaria’s Varna charged with defeating the ends of justice
The anti-corruption special unit has lodged charges against a Varna District Court judge of defeating the ends of justice, Bulgaria’s Prosecutor-General’s office said on March 20.
Judge Svetozar Georgiev is charged with pressuring Varna regional prosecutor Zlatka Zadgorska to terminate the prosecution of a police officer who forgot his Kalashnikov automatic rifle on the bonnet of his car.
The police officer allegedly asked for Judge Georgiev’s assistance because of their close friendship.
The judge sought to try to persuade prosecutor Zadgorska that what the police officer had done was not a crime within the meaning of the law.
Not only did Zadgorska not succumb to the pressure, she also filed a report against the judge.
The criminal charges against the police officer went ahead. He was found guilty and was fined 1000 leva (about 511 euro).
The judge to sit in the trial of Judge Georgiev will be determined by the random selection system of cases of the Sofia City Court, the statement by the Prosecutor’s Office said.
