Man dies in avalanche near Bulgaria’s Seven Lakes of Rila

A man died in an avalanche near Bulgaria’s Seven Lakes of Rila on January 6 2017,  as the country was hit by widespread heavy snowfalls and strong winds.

Bulgarian Red Cross Mountain Rescue Service teams mounted a search operation, involving 40 people and sniffer dogs, after being alerted by the man’s brother.

The man had a weak pulse when found but efforts to resuscitate him failed, the Mountain Rescue Service said.

Meanwhile, the Mountain Rescue Service warned people against going to the higher altitudes of Sofia’s Vitosha Mountain.

The temperature at the Aleko Hut was minus 11 degrees Celsius. The new snowfall added up to 40cm.

The snow on Vitosha was not that excessive but there was a danger of avalanches on the leeward slopes of the mountain.

Those visiting Vitosha were urged not to leave the tracks and marked routes.
