Strike causes cancellations of five Lufthansa flights at Sofia Airport on November 23

Industrial action by the pilots union Vereinigung Cockpit has prompted the cancellation of five Lufthansa flights from Sofia Airport on November 23 being cancelled, with the corresponding return flights also scrapped.

Three of those flights were bound for Munich and two for Frankfurt.

The pilots union has called for a strike for Lufthansa flights from Germany on all continental and intercontinental routes on November 23. Reports in international media said that a total of 876 flights were cancelled as a result of the strike, with an estimated 100 000 passengers affected.

The strike is the result of a long-standing dispute between Lufthansa and the union over pay rises, which has disrupted the airline’s operations repeatedly over the past year.

Flights from Lufthansa Group airlines Germanwings, Eurowings, Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, SWISS and Brussels Airlines were not affected by the strike actions and will therefore operate as planned.

“Lufthansa regrets the inconvenience caused by the VC strike and will try to minimise the impact on its passengers,” the airline said.
