Bulgarian PM Borissov discusses migrant crisis with Merkel

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borissov has discussed the migrant crisis with Angela Merkel, with the German chancellor pledging support for Bulgaria seeking further resources, Borissov’s office said.

Borissov and Merkel discussed the “increasingly complicated and difficult situation” regarding the migrant crisis, the statement said.

Bulgaria’s Defence Ministry and Interior Ministry leadership continually personally monitored the situation at Bulgaria’s borders and provided additional staff, patrols and equipment, which required spending more funds from the Budget, Borissov said.

Borissov said that he briefed Merkel on the actions undertaken by Bulgaria to ensure safety and security at its borders, including regarding “events in Turkey” – a reference to the recent failed coup attempt against Turkish president Erdogan.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister said that he had sought assistance from EU border agency Frontex to provide equipment, vessels and helicopters and had received an assurance from Merkel that she would raise the matter with the European Commission.
