Two die in avalanche on Sofia’s Vitosha Mountain

Two people died in an avalanche on Vitosha Mountain above Bulgaria’s capital city Sofia, the Bulgarian Red Cross’s Mountain Rescue Service said on January 21 2016.

A rescue operation involving 14 staff and two rescue dogs was started after the tourists were reported missing at about 4am.

The two had been on their way from the Aleko hut to the upper station of the Zaeka lift.

The first body was found at 9.47am, buried in an avalanche.

The Mountain Rescue Service said that there was no danger in the area of the ski slopes on Vitosha.
