78 parties, three coalitions to compete in Bulgaria’s October 2015 municipal elections

The Central Election Commission (CEC) has accepted the applications of 78 political parties and three coalitions to stand in Bulgaria’s mayoral and municipal elections on October 2015, the CEC said on September 10.

The applications by three parties were turned down – the Bulgarian Communist Party, the Christian Social Union – CSU and the Christian Reformist party.

The checking process is still continuing, to establish whether each application has the required signatures of 2500 voters. This process will continue until September 12. The registrations of parties with too few valid signatures will be withdrawn.

So far 10 parties have applied to campaign in the national referendum to be held on the same day on the question of whether to allow electronic voting in future elections and referendums. The deadline for applications by parties and coalitions to participate in the referendum is September 14.

So far, the CEC has identified 307 locations in 40 countries abroad to be used as polling stations. The commission has received 344 applications for the opening of polling stations, the most in the United States, 107.

Under Bulgaria’s election law, a polling station abroad is opened if in previous elections more than 100 voters cast their ballots there.
