Almost 21 000 migrants arrived in Greece just last week
About 20 843 migrants arrived in Greece last week (August 8 to 14) by sea, the UNHCR United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced Tuesday in Geneva, saying he expects from Greece “more leadership” in crisis management, while he asks for the assistance of the EU.
The number of 20 843 immigrants represents almost 50 per cent of all seaborne migrants’ arrivals in Greece in 2014, who had eventually reached 43 500, underlines the UNHCR, noting that “the pace of arrivals has been increasing in recent weeks”.
Only in July, there were 50 242 arrivals, ie more than in the whole 2014.
Of the arrivals last week, the vast majority of immigrants came from Syria (82 per cent). Afghans accounted for 14 per cent and Iraqis and three per cent.
