Plovdiv celebrates official European Capital of Culture status with concert, release of 2019 balloons

Bulgaria’s second city Plovdiv celebrated on May 23 its official naming by EU culture ministers earlier in the week as European Capital of Culture 2019.

Along with performances by bands and choral groups, there was a speech by mayor Ivan Totev and then the release of 2019 balloons – or rather, 2018, when one popped, no, 2017, when one prematurely escaped the net, or, finally, after another popped, 2016 balloons.
