Bulgaria issued weather alert over wind, but sunny weather expected for Easter

Two districts in eastern Bulgaria were issued a “code orange” weather alert for strong winds and nine other got the lesser “code yellow” warning on April 7, but weather forecasts predicted sunny and warm weather for the four-day Eastern weekend.

Varna and Dobrich were expecting gale-strength winds, reaching up to 30m/s at times. The nine districts issued the code yellow alert were Rousse, Razgrad, Silistra, Shoumen, Turgovishte, Sliven, Bourgas, Yambol, Haskovo and Kurdjali.

The wind warning comes only a day after a code orange was declared in 12 districts in southern and western Bulgaria for heavy rain, with the rest of the country issued a code yellow.

Authorities said that a number of dams were being emptied in controlled fashion, but there was no danger of flooding as a result of the heavy rain.

Bulgaria’s meteorology institute said that the skies would remain mostly clouded, with some chance of rain, on April 7 and 8, but the weather would turn sunny and warm starting April 9. Bulgaria celebrates Easter with a four-day public holiday on April 10-13.
