Weekend heavy rain caused millions of leva damage to Bulgaria’s roads

States of emergency were still in force in various parts of southern and eastern Bulgaria on February 2 after heavy rains and strong winds that struck at the weekend.

A second wave of heavy rain hit Bourgas overnight, with the Dolno Ezerovo region again the worst hit, with a reported 70 houses flooded.

States of emergency were still in force in nine villages in the municipality of Dobrich, as well as in the districts of Smolyan, Vurshets, Devin, Topolovgrad and Kurdjali.

Lazar Lazarov of the Road Infrastructure told Nova Televizia that damage to roads from pouring rain and floods on February 1 alone was estaimted at 10 leva million leva (about five million euro).

Part of the damage was caused landslides and rivers bursting their banks.

A partial state of emergency was declared on February 2 in the town of Strazhitsa in the Veliko Turnovo region.
