Nato Secretary-General praises Bulgaria’s participation in alliance missions

Nato Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, on his first visit to Sofia as head of the alliance, has praised Bulgaria’s participation in Nato missions and said that the Bulgarian military have a reputation as excellent professionals.

This is according to a media statement by the Bulgarian government after Stoltenberg held talks with Prime Minister Boiko Borissov.

Stoltenberg and Borissov discussed co-operation within Nato, regional and energy security.

Borisov emphasised the effective and pragmatic use of defence resources, in order to strike a balance the budget’s capacity and the possibilities of maintaining highly-trained armed forces properly materially backed.

The Prime Minister and the Nato Secretary-General discussed the opportunities provided by the initiatives of the EU and Nato in Smart Defence and capacity-sharing.

During his January 22 2015 visit to Sofia, Stoltenberg – who became Nato Secretary-General on October 1 2014 – was also due to meet Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov, Defence Minister Nikolai Nenchev and head of state President Rossen Plevneliev.
