Three foreigners wanted in Spain on terrorism charges arrested in Bulgaria ‘on way to Syria’

Three foreign nationals wanted by Spain in connection with terrorist activities have been arrested in Bulgaria, while on their way to take part in fighting in Syria, according to Bulgaria’s State Agency for National Security (SANS).

The three, including two Moroccan nationals and a Brazilian, were arrested on December 15 after the agency was notified through international channels that they were on Bulgarian territory, SANS said.

The group had intended transiting Bulgaria to Turkey and then Syria, SANS said. They were arrested while trying to leave Bulgaria via the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint with Turkey.

The three were subject to international arrest warrants after a notification by Interpol’s office in Madrid.

The Supreme Cassation Prosecutor’s office had been notified and the three would have extradition procedures initiated against them, the agency said.
