Film review: Maps to the Stars

Imagine Keeping Up with the Kardashians, but with more drugs, arson and incest. This is as good a place as any to start discussing Maps to the Stars, David Cronenberg’s latest film. This satirical drama follows a Hollywood family obsessed with the quest for celebrity. While many films that focus on the people who make movies display glamour and sophistication, Maps to the Stars chooses to look at the toll fame takes on the stars.

The script shines as it seamlessly connects the Weiss family to an ensemble of characters that are wildly outlandish, at times insane, yet relatable. And once the audience gets past the shock value of the incest, the story flows logically and smoothly.

The film’s complexity lends itself to strong performances from a solid cast of actors. Most notable is Julianne Moore, who received a Best Actress Award for her part at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
