Bulgarian capital Sofia named European Capital of Sport 2018

Bulgarian capital city Sofia has been named European Capital of Sport 2018, the municipality said on October 14.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the evaluation committee of ACES Europe, the European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation, the municipality’s media statement said.

ACES Europe is a private organisation with no organisational link to European Union institutions.

The municipality said that, in a letter to Sofia mayor Yordanka Fandukova, ACES Europe president Gian Lupatelli said that Sofia was a good example of the development of sport as a means to improve healthy living, integration and education, which were among the main objectives of the initiative.

Sofia bid for the title for 2017 but was beaten by Marseille. However, the organisation’s rules are that in the event of a close result, the capital in second place gets the title in the subsequent year.
