What’s On: Italian bass Furnaletto in Sofia Opera and Ballet’s Don Carlo on September 20
Sofia Opera and Ballet opens its new 2014/15 season on September 20 2014 with a performance of Verdi’s opera Don Carlo, with famous Italian bass Ferruccio Furlanetto in the role of Philip II.
The opening performance, starting at 7pm, is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Bulgarian opera great Boris Christoff and the 100th anniversary of opera director Mihail Hadzhimishev.
Don Carlo, which premiered in Paris in March 1867, is based on dramas in the life of Prince Carlos of Asturias (1545-1568) after his betrothed, Elisabeth of Valois, was instead married to his father, Philip II of Spain as part of the peace treaty ending the 1551/59 Italian war between the houses of Hapsburg and Valois.
