EU commissioner: Privacy and free media need to be balanced

EU Justice Commissioner Martine Reicherts made a speech in protest against companies placing a “spanner in the works” over the “right to be forgotten” rule, where the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ordered search engine giant Google to remove information about a Spanish national.

In May this year, information about an auction notice on the complainant’s repossessed home was judged to be an infringement of privacy, a decision which has sparked intense debate over the future of data protection in the EU.

Commissioner Reicherts’ speech was delivered at the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, where she complained that reform of this issue is being undermined by targeting the ECJ rule.
