Agriculture: Heavy rains make Bulgarian farmer eye harvests with concern

Bulgaria’s farmers are watching with concern as continuous thunderstorms and heavy rains could impact harvests of wheat and barley as well as fruit and vegetables, with at least one prediction that the bad weather will push up prices of local fruit and vegetables.

The heavy rain, which in places in Bulgaria has caused flooding, has delayed the start of the wheat and barley harvest. Farmers say that if the rains do not stop soon, there is a risk of serious damage to the harvest of wheat and barley.

In the Danubian city of Rousse, it has been raining for several days, although grain growers there say that this is no cause for concern.
