Standoff continues in Ukraine

With snow on the ground, Ukrainian protesters maintained their vigil in Kiev’s Independence Square, even after police had moved campaigners away from the many government buildings they had been blockading.

Catherine Ashton, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, arrived in Ukraine and held talks with President Viktor Yanukovych, after calling for the Ukrainian authorities to exercise “utmost restraint” when dealing with protesters angry at the scrapping of a trade agreement with the EU.

The US assistant secretary of state Victoria Nuland was also in Ukraine, meeting opposition figures concerned at Yanukovych’s apparent pivot toward Russia at the expense of ties with Brussels.
