Hungary: Massive VAT fraud over Slovak border
The number of lorries entering Hungary from Slovakia has fallen by 25 per cent during the three months since customs officers began spot checks on freight crossing the open border, financial daily Napi Gazdaság wrote on Wednesday. This has been interpreted as a sign of the scale of tax fraud, with the newspaper estimating that the heightened monitoring could reduce the value of illegal goods entering Hungary by as much as a trillion forint (3.41 billion euro) a year.
