Lufthansa strike leads to flight cancellations at Sofia Airport

The strike by ground staff at Lufthansa has led the cancellation of arriving and departing flights at Sofia Airport on March 21 2013.

The 6.30am departure to Munich, the noon flight from Munich and the 1.20pm arrival from Frankfurt all were cancelled. Sofia Airport’s website had not, by mid-morning, updated the status of the 12.40pm departure to Munich.

The Verdi union called on 33 000 employees to stage a five-hour walkout on March 21 in a row over wages and conditions, the BBC said. Verdi is calling for a 5.2 per cent increase in wages for employees at several Lufthansa divisions. But Lufthansa is trying to cut costs in the face of soaring jet fuel prices and increased competition from Middle Eastern and low-cost airlines.
