Economy and Tourism Minister to put Bansko new ski facilities proposals to Cabinet meeting

Bulgaria’s Economy, Energy and Tourism Minister Delyan Dobrev will brief his Cabinet colleagues on January 16 2012 on steps to date towards new ski facilities in the Pirin mountains, Dobrev’s ministry said after he met Bansko’s mayor to hear local demands for construction of new facilities and ski runs.

Bansko residents have held public protests in recent weeks in support of their demands, blocking roads but also drawing backing from high-level figures in Bulgaria’s ruling party.

At a meeting on January 15, Bansko mayor Georgi Ikonomov presented to Dobrev a copy of a draft amendment to the management plan of Pirin National Park.

The plan is to be discussed in February at a meeting of Bulgaria’s supreme expert environmental council, Dobrev’s ministry said.

In December, Bansko’s mayor presented to Prime Minister Boiko Borissov a petition for the construction of a second ski run in the popular winter resort town.

At the January 15 meeting, Dobrev emphasised that he supported the development of tourism in Bulgaria and said that the changes would assist individuals and businesses in the region.
