Number of people in Bulgaria sentenced for tax crimes triples to close to 2000
A total of 1979 people in Bulgaria were sentenced for tax crimes in 2011, close to three times the number in 2009 and 56 per cent more than in 2010, according to records kept by prosecutors and announced by the National Revenue Agency.
There had been a significant increase in successfully initiated pre-trial proceedings in cases of tax crime, the agency said on July 24 2012, quoted by news website Mediapool.
The improved success rate was the result of tax authorities having stepped up efforts to detect tax evasion, the agency said.
For the past four years, there have been co-ordination centres in major cities in Bulgaria, made up of National Revenue Agency staff, law enforcement officers and prosecutors. Their task is to co-ordinate work on tax evasion cases, collecting evidence and exchanging expertise, the agency said.
