PM Radev calls emergency meeting after drone attacks on two ships in Bulgarian EEZ, with one sunk
Bulgarian Prime Minister Roumen Radev convened a meeting on October 6 with representatives of four ministries, the Presidency and security services after two ships were hit by drones in the Bulgarian exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea, the government information service said.
The attacks took place about 80 miles off the coast of Byala in Bulgaria’s Varna district.
According to the Maritime.bg website, one of the vessels – Togo-flagged Alfa Watan – sunk, with no immediate word of the fate of the crew.
Two vessels, Bulgarian-flagged passenger ship Dioscuria and Saint Kitts and Nevis-flagged Mercy were taking part in rescue operations. The entire 18-member crew of the motor ship Able, which was on fire after the drone attacks, was rescued by the Dioscuria and were being transferred to a Bulgarian Border Police vessels to be taken ashore.
Several Bulgarian media reports on October 6 said that according to their sources, the drones used in the attacks on the two commercial vessels in Bulgaria’s EEZ were Russian.
The October 6 attacks in Bulgaria’s EEZ come a day after two people died and 11 were rescued after a Turkish vessel that had been transporting grain from Ukraine to Italy caught fire and sank in the Black Sea in Romania’s exclusive economic zone following a Russian drone attack.
