Official: Bulgarian President Yotova to designate Gyurov as caretaker Prime Minister

Bulgarian head of state President Iliyana Yotova will on February 12 designate central Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) deputy governor Andrei Gyurov as caretaker Prime Minister and hand him the task of forming a caretaker government, according to the President’s official website.

The announcement follows Yotova’s consultations with the 10 office-bearers on the list of those eligible to be appointed caretaker Prime Minister and her consultations with parliamentary groups.

In the consultations with parliamentary groups, most did not tell Yotova whom they would prefer to be caretaker Prime Minister, while the few who did so named or hinted at Gyurov.

Gyurov, who is on unpaid leave from the central bank because of a dispute about his eligibility for the post, was one of five office-bearers who expressed willingness to take up the post of caretaker Prime Minister if asked.

Gyurov was parliamentary leader of the We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria coalition in the 47th and 48th Parliaments and was a member of the 49th, which in July 2023 elected him to a six-year term in office as deputy governor of BNB, as head of the Issue Department.

He has doctorate from the University of Vienna and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Truman State University in Missouri. His CV, in English, is available at this link.

As caretaker Prime Minister-designate, Gyurov will have seven days to submit to the President a proposed caretaker government. Once that caretaker government takes office, Yotova must decree a date for parliamentary elections, to be held within two months.
