Bulgaria’s Vassil Levski Sofia Airport official opens Terminal 2’s renovated covered car park

SOF Connect, the operator of Vasil Levski Sofia Airport, officially opened on February 10 the renovated multi-storey cover car park at Terminal 2.

The car park renovation was implemented over a year in partnership with GBS-Infrastructure Construction.

The renovation investment of 16.6 million euro is one of the largest made in a single project since the airport’s transformation to date, Sofia Airport said in a media statement.

SOF Connect has invested 93 million euro in the capital’s airport since the beginning of the concession, the statement said.

The renovated facility has four underground and one completely new above-ground level.

As a result of the project, the total capacity of the multi-storey car park is now 930, with 30 of the spaces being for cars of people with limited mobility.

During the reconstruction, some of the most modern civil engineering activities were used to strengthen the vertical structural elements with additional reinforced concrete walls and earthquake washers, as well as to reinforce the slabs with innovative carbon fibers and steel beams, the media statement said.

In the process of work, complete sandblasting and injection of structural cracks, hydroblasting of the concrete and replacement of expansion joints were carried out. The security of the site is also guaranteed by a completely new video surveillance system, the airport said.

The statement said that the project also has a strong environmental aspect, as all concrete waste generated during the construction activities was removed and recycled by the main contractor GBS-Infrastructural Construction and reused in the renovation of the cover car park.

Thierry Deau, the founder, Chairman and CEO of the French infrastructure fund Meridiam and chairman of the supervisory board of SOF Connect, Marie Dumoulin, ambassador of France to Bulgaria, Jesus Caballero, CEO of SOF Connect, Emil Angelov, deputy chairman of the management board and CEO of Glavbolgarstroy Holding and Todor Gochev, chairman of the management board and CEO of GBS-Infratsructure Construction, participated in the inaugural ceremony.
