Dangerous weather warning for almost all of Bulgaria over forecast heavy snowfall

Bulgaria’s national meteorological bureau has issued the Code Orange warning of dangerous weather for 24 out of the country’s 28 districts for February 1 because of forecast heavy snowfall.

The remaining four districts – Vidin, Sofia city, Pernik and Kyustendil – are subject to the lesser Code Yellow warning of potentially dangerous weather, also because of forecast snowfall.

The meteorological bureau said on January 31 that on Sunday morning, snowfall will begin from the south-west, and it will cover the entire country by the evening and in most districts, it will be intense and significant in quantity.

In the evening, there will also be intense snowfall in north-eastern Bulgaria.

Snow cover will form, reaching 15-20 cm in southern Bulgaria and 10 – 15cm in northern Bulgaria.

A moderate, briefly, strong north-east wind will blow in eastern Bulgaria, bringing in cold air. There will be snowstorms.

Temperatures will be almost constant throughout the day, mainly between minus 3° and 2° Celsius, in Sofia 0°-1°.

In the mountains it will be cloudy with snowfalls, most intense and significant in the Rhodope mountains. A moderate to strong easterly wind will blow, with a south-easterly wind on the highest peaks.

There will be snow blizzards and drifts on the mountain passes. The maximum temperature at an altitude of 1200 metres will be about minus 1°, at 2000 metres, about minus 6°.

The weather will be cloudy and rainy along the Black Sea coast. It will snow, with rain on the southern coast, which will also turn into snow. A moderate and strong wind will blow from the north-northeast, bringing cold air. The maximum temperatures will be 1°-3°, slightly higher south of Bourgas, the meteorological bureau said.

On January 30, Bulgaria’s Road Infrastructure Agency issued an appeal to motorists who are planning a trip in the coming days to set off with cars prepared for winter conditions.
