Romania, Poland scramble fighter jets over drone incidents
Romania and Poland reported on September 15 that they had scrambled fighter jets in connection with drone incidents.
Romania’s Ministry of National Defence said that its radar system had detected several aerial targets in Ukraine, near the border with Romania, on September 15.
At about 3.10am, an aerial target was detected about 35km north of Chilia, the ministry said
Two Romanian Air Force F-16 aircraft, conducting Air Policing Service at the 86th Borcea Air Base, scrambled to monitor the situation.
The National Military Command Centre notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations regarding the implementation of alert measures for the population in northern Tulcea County, and a RO-Alert message was issued at 3.18am.
Two additional targets were detected around 4.20am, 30km north of Periprava, and a new RO-Alert message was sent to the population in northern Tulcea County at 4.51am.
No breaches of the national airspace were reported, the Ministry of National Defence said. The air alert ceased at 5.18am.
Poland’s military aviation was also activated as a preventive measure against Russian strikes on Ukraine. The Polish armed forces described the operation as short-lived and specified that there was no violation of national airspace there either.
As The Sofia Globe reported earlier, Nato fighter jets intercepted and destroyed a drone that entered Lithuanian airspace, Lithuania’s President Gitanas Nausėda said on Facebook on September 15.
