Bulgarian Prosecutor’s Office: Chinese citizen charged with espionage

The Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office lodged a charge of espionage on June 19 against a Chinese citizen, the Prosecutor’s Office said on June 22.

Pre-trial proceedings were started on June 18 following a report by the State Agency for National Security, the statement said.

The Sofia City Court, in a ruling on June 21, remanded the accused in custody.

The statement said that the court accepted the prosecution’s arguments that there was sufficient evidence to conclude that the accused was responsible for the crime for which he was charged.

The court accepted that there was a real risk of the accused absconding, and found that the most severe measure of detention was warranted, the statement said.

The court’s ruling is subject to appeal.

The investigation is continuing under the leadership of the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office, the statement said.
