Flu epidemic in Bulgaria’s Dobrich: Schools go over to distance learning

An influenza epidemic declaration takes effect in Bulgaria’s district of Dobrich from January 19 to 25, with measures including school pupils going over to distance learning and stepped-up anti-epidemic measures in hospitals.

Dobrich is the second district this year to declare a flu epidemic, after Varna, where a flu epidemic declaration is in effect until January 19.

In Dobrich, the number of school pupils who have flu has doubled in just a few days, with absences in the district having reached 14 per cent as of January 15.

High incidences of flu are also reported in the districts of Silistra, Bourgas, Haskovo, Yambol, Pernik and Sofia district (as distinct from Sofia city).

Bulgaria’s Chief State Health Inspector, Associate Professor Angel Kunchev, said that it is obvious that the statistics bring to the fore cases of flu among children and adolescents.

“For children, we most often seek medical help – that’s why,” Kunchev said.
