Bulgaria issues weather warnings for January 8 over forecast strong winds, rain
Bulgaria’s national meteorological bureau has issued the Code Orange warning of dangerous weather for the district of Kurdzhali for January 8 because of forecast heavy rain, while several other districts are subject to the lesser Code Yellow warning because of forecast strong winds.
The districts subject to the Code Yellow warning are Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Sofia district (as distinct from the district of Sofia city), Pazardzhik, Plovdiv, Lovech, Pleven, Gabrovo, Veliko Turnovo, Sliven, Turgovishte, Rousse, Razgrad, Shoumen, Varna, Dobrich and Silistra.
The remaining districts are classified Code Green for Thursday, meaning that no weather warning is in place.
The meteorological bureau said that on January 8, will be cloudy, precipitation will continue and in isolated places, there will be thunderstorms.
With the decrease in temperatures in a large part of the country, the rain will turn into snow and mainly in northern Bulgaria and the mountainous regions a snow cover will form.
In the evening, precipitation from the north-west will stop. The wind throughout the country will orient from the north-west, will strengthen and with it cold air will come in. In the Upper Thracian Lowland and the Danube Plain it will be strong with gusts to stormy.
It is possible that there will be snow drifts on the mountain passes and in Ludogorie, and in the north-western regions, ice.
Temperatures will remain almost unchanged throughout the day – from minus 1° – minus 3° Celsius in the north-western to 13°-15° in the south-eastern regions.
In Sofia, the expected minimum temperature will be minus 3°, and the maximum – around minus 2°.
It will be cloudy and windy over the mountains. There will be precipitation, in places with thunderstorms and significant in the Rila-Rhodope region, and with the decrease in temperatures in the lower parts it will turn into snow.
A strong and stormy wind will blow from the west-north-west. The maximum temperature at an altitude of 1200 metres will be about 0°, at 2000 metres, about minus 5°.
It will be cloudy and windy along the Black Sea coast. There will be rain, with isolated thunderstorms. Moderate to strong winds will blow from the west-north-west. Maximum temperatures will be 12° – 16°, the meteorological bureau said.
