Bulgaria’s New Year public holidays weather outlook

Bulgaria’s New Year public holidays from December 31 to January 2 – extended as a one-off because of the transition to the euro – are set to see chilly and sunny to partly cloudy weather, according to the forecast by the national meteorological bureau.

On December 31, cold air will sweep in with a strong north-west wind. The weather will be sunny, periodically getting a bit cloudier, the meteorological bureau said.

In the evening, it will be windy, mostly clear with temporary increases in cloudiness, and isolated light snowfalls are possible, mainly in the mountains.

By midnight, temperatures will range from minus 9° to minus 8° Celsius in places in the north-western Fore-Balkans to minus 3° to minus 2° in the far eastern parts of the country.

The forecasts for temperatures on December 31 are Sofia -6° to 2°, Plovdiv -3° to 3°, Varna -3° to 2° and Bourgas -3° to 3°.

On January 1, the north-west wind will weaken, and on Friday it will turn to the south-west and strengthen again; on Saturday and Sunday it will be quite windy. Rapid warming will begin, and on Sunday the minimum temperatures will already be above zero, and the maximum – between 10° and 15°. Sunny weather will prevail, with temporary increases in cloudiness.

There will be almost no precipitation, only in isolated places insignificant short-term precipitation is possible. In the areas sheltered from the wind, mainly in the western part of the Upper Thracian Lowland, it will be foggy in the morning, and daytime temperatures will remain lower.

At the beginning of next week, there will be more significant increases in cloudiness, and the probability of precipitation increases. In eastern Bulgaria and north of the mountains, a strong south-west wind will blow and it will remain warm for the period, the meteorological bureau said.
