The second helicopter for providing emergency medical assistance by air landed in Bulgaria on the afternoon of February 28, the country’s Health Ministry said.

It will be stationed at the regional Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) base in the town of Sliven, the ministry said.

The eight aeromedical teams that will work there have already been formed, consisting of nine doctors and eight nurses.

The ministry said that the teams have undergone mandatory training, as well as the necessary examinations, in accordance with the requirements for European aviation medical class 2.

The first air mission in Bulgaria was carried out in early June 2024, after Bulgaria took delivery of the first helicopter in February 2024. So far, the HEMS teams have completed a total of 49 missions, with six completed since the beginning of 2025.

According to preliminary information from Italian company Leonardo S.p.A., the third helicopter will be delivered to the country by the end of March 2025, the ministry said.
