Bulgaria issues weather warnings over heavy snowfall
Bulgaria’s meteorological bureau has issued the Code Orange warning of hazardous weather for five districts for February 18 because of forecast heavy snowfalls.
The five districts subject to the Code Orange warning are Turgovishte, Shoumen, Dobrich, Silistra and Razgrad.
Four districts are subject to the lesser Code Yellow warning of potentially hazardous weather, also because of forecast heavy snowfalls: Bourgas, Varna, Sliven and Rousse.
Bulgaria’s other districts are classified as Code Green for February 18, meaning that no weather warning is in place.
Heavy snowfall began in many places in Bulgaria on February 17, and the weather bureau said that over the next 24 hours, most of the country would remain cold, cloudy, with snowfall, and in the far south-eastern parts of the country, rain.
Minimum temperatures will be between minus 5° and 0°, and the maximums between minus 3° and 2°.
In Sofia, the minimum temperature on February 18 will be around minus 5°, and the maximum, around 0°.
It will be cloudy in the mountains with snowfalls, heavy in the eastern Stara Planina.
The Road Infrastructure Agency said on February 17 that 718 snow removal machines were working on the national road network to ensure safe travel for motorists.
The agency and the Regional Development Ministry appealed to motorists to travel in vehicles prepared for winter conditions, to drive at speeds appropriate for the conditions and to avoid overtaking snow removal equipment.
