Climatologist: Summer 2024 in Bulgaria warmest in 140 years
Summer 2024 has been Bulgaria’s warmest in 140 years, climatologist Simeon Matev told Nova Televizia on September 2.
Matev was referring to the period in which meteorological observations in Bulgaria began.
This is in contrast to the reports by Bulgaria’s national weather bureau, which cites records onwards from the year 1930, when record-keeping by modern scientific method began. The official weather bureau has called into question the accuracy of some of the measurements taken in Bulgaria before 1930.
Matev said that in the past 140 years in Bulgaria, the previous hottest summer had been in 2012.
According to the national weather bureau, as The Sofia Globe has reported, there has been a near-consecutive succession of months since autumn 2023 that have seen record-high temperatures.
According to the weather bureau’s forecast for September 2024, average temperatures are expected to be above the norm.
The highest temperatures in September will be between 32 degrees and 37 degrees Celsius, and the lowest between seven and 12 deg C, though maximums will be higher along the Black Sea, the weather bureau said.
Most of the days of the first 10 days of September will be mostly sunny in most of the country, and temperatures will be higher than usual.
In the second 10-day period, the outlook is for more days with an increased probability of precipitation.
Temperatures will drop, in relative terms, but will remain above climatic norms. It is expected to be dry and sunny at the beginning and during this time.
During the third 10-day period, temperatures are expected to remain relatively high.
The weather will be mostly sunny, there will be temporary increases in cloudiness mainly in the afternoon hours and in mountainous areas, Bulgaria’s national weather bureau said.
