Bulgaria’s 2016 road death toll reaches 589 at end of October

A total of 589 people have died in road accidents in Bulgaria since the start of 2016, the Interior Ministry said in a daily report on October 31.

In Bulgaria, which has one of the worst road death rates in the European Union, there have been a total of 6247 road accidents since January 1 2016, leaving 7882 people injured, according to the Interior Ministry figures.

By the time of the October 31 report, there had been 61 deaths and 743 people had been injured this month, the report said.

The year 2015 ended with 680 road deaths in Bulgaria, in 7296 accidents, which left 8946 people injured.

In Bulgaria and in Romania, the number of road deaths per million inhabitants in 2015 was 95, while the EU figure per million was 51.5.

The figure for Bulgaria was four per cent higher than the 91 per million in 2014. It was 12 per cent lower than the 105 per million in 2010.
