Poland breaks ground for missile defence site amid Russia’s concerns

Polish and US officials Friday broke ground for a US missile defence interceptor site at Redzikowo, near the Baltic coast.

The ceremony marked the launch of construction on a system designed to counter the threat of short- and medium-range ballistic missiles launched from the Middle East. It will join a similar air force base in Romania. Both sites are due to become fully operational by 2018.

The event was attended by US Deputy Defense Secretary Robert O. Work along the Polish President Andrzej Duda and Poland’s Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz.
