Polish former presidents accuse government of destroying democracy

Three former Polish presidents signed an open letter published Monday on the front page of the Gazeta Wyborcza daily saying that Poland’s conservative government is destroying the country’s constitution and urging Polish citizens to “defend democracy”.

Lech Walesa, Aleksander Kwasniewski and Bronislaw Komorowski, as well as former Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski and six other prominent officials wrote that the right-wing government of Law and Justice (PiS) is “destroying the constitutional order and paralyzing the work of the Constitutional Tribunal”.
