Poland’s outgoing ruling party faces leadership challenges after defeat

The election defeat of Poland’s governing party Civic Platform (PO) will likely result in leadership challenges, as the outgoing PO leader Ewa Kopacz is facing internal opposition and will have to struggle to keep her position in the party, Polish media write.

The dissatisfied faction includes politicians sidelined after Kopacz took over as party chief from Donald Tusk, namely former Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski and former Finance Minister Jacek Rostowski as well as the outgoing Foreign Minister and the party’s former secretary general Grzegorz Schetyna, the party caucus head Rafal Grupinski, Administration and Digitization Minister Andrzej Halicki and some regional leaders.
