Bulgarian Foreign Ministry: Don’t pick up hitchhikers in Greece

Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry recommended on August 26 that Bulgarian citizens travelling in Greece should not pick up hitchhikers.

The advisory came against the background of what the foreign ministry called the “complicated migrant situation” in Greece and the movement of large numbers of illegal immigrants and refugees on the road network of the country.

The ministry said that such an action was defined as trafficking in persons, according to the Greek Penal Code, and was a serious criminal offence for which the punishment was imprisonment at least two years for each illegal immigrant transported.
