Polish President: Auschwitz tribute should not be politicised

Polish President Bronisław Komorowski has said that the anniversary commemorations of the liberation of the Nazi death camp in Auschwitz to be held on January 26 should not be used for political purposes.

He called for putting aside any disputes as a show of respect for all these survivors of the concentration camp who will take part in the anniversary events.

Komorowski’s words come after a statement made by Poland’s Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna that it is Ukrainians, rather than the Soviet Red Army, that freed the concentration camp in Auschwitz 70 years ago, caused outrage among Russia’s officials.
