Netflix sets sights on Europe

Netflix, the U.S. video-streaming giant, is set to launch the second phase of its European expansion plan next week in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and France.

However, Netflix is receiving a frosty reception in France where the government wants more oversight and the cinema industry wants the company to invest heavily in French productions.

Netflix subscribers can watch as much content as they want, at any time, on almost any Internet-connected device, such as a laptop, tablet or smartphone.

It has also enjoyed much success by creating original content, such as the political strategy drama series House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey, and the comedy-drama Orange Is The New Black, set in a women’s prison.

Netflix is hoping to woo French viewers with a House of Cards-style drama set in Marseilles.

Netflix already has 50 million subscribers worldwide.

It has been available in Britain, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands for several years.

Netflix is based in Los Gatos, California.
