Sofia metro railway extension to airport on schedule – official

Construction work on the extension of the Sofia metro railway to the city’s international airport was progressing on schedule, the chief executive of municipal firm Metropolitan Stoyan Bratoev said, as quoted by mass circulation daily 24 Chassa on September 9.

The extension to Sofia Airport was expected to be completed in March 2015, with the extension to the Sofia Business Park also on scheduled to begin operations two months later, Bratoev said.

With those two extensions due to be completed in quick succession, adding seven new stations to Sofia’s metro rail network and finally reaching two of the major landmarks envisioned to have metro rail access, the municipal company will be able to focus on the third line of the Sofia Metro.

Construction on the third line – envisioned as mainly above-ground light-rail transit – is expected to begin in the summer of 2015. The line will link the Ovcha Koupel and Levski residential neighbourhoods.

The tender results to pick the construction company for the third line have been appealed, with the Supreme Administrative Court due to hear the case on October 20, the daily said.
