Mayor of Bulgaria’s Vidin arrested over contracts for food for kindergartens
Bulgaria’s State Agency for National Security (SANS) has arrested the mayor of the northern city of Vidin in connection with allegations regarding the awarding of public procurement contracts for the supply of food to kindergartens.
Mayor Gergo Guergov was taken into custody after a SANS team carried out an unannounced check at his office and that of deputy mayor in charge of humanitarian activities and social policy, Borislav Borissov.
Guergov (36), elected as Vidin’s mayor in 2011 as the candidate of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, was remanded in custody for 24 hours.
His arrest followed media reports and local outrage at the award of some contracts for the supply of food to kindergartens. The contracts were awarded in terms of Vidin’s 2011/14 budget.
