Bulgarian President confers awards on ambassadors

At a ceremony on July 28 2014, President Rossen Plevneliev conferred Bulgaria’s Madara Horseman medal, first degree, on four outgoing ambassadors.

The diplomats who received honours from Plevneliev are Danish ambassador Kaare Erhard Janson, Cypriot ambassador Stavros Amvrosiou, Austrian ambassador Gerhard Reiweger and Polish ambassador Leszek Hensel.

Until 2013, it was traditional for the Bulgarian presidents to confer the highest civilian honour, the Stara Planina, on outgoing ambassadors, but the practice was discontinued after the Plamen Oresharski administration took umbrage at diplomats’ remarks on the anti-government protests of last summer.
