What’s On: Brazzobrazzie brass festival at Sofia Live Club, March 7 and 8

The 2014 Brazzobrazzie, the third annual such festival of brass music, is at Sofia Live Club in the Bulgarian capital city on March 7 and 8.

A major drawcard is US trombonist Jiggs Whigham, whose long career stretches back to 1960 as soloist and first trombonist with the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

Artist director of the Bujazzo, the German national youth jazz orchestra, Whigham is president of the International Trombone Association and a life member of the British and German trombone societies.

Organisers said that Whigham was delighted to do a joint concert with Bulgarian musicians.

On the programme along with Whigham on March 7 are Bulgaria’s De Fuego Orchestra, formed in 2008, and the (by their own description) “funk, punk, hip-hop and two per cent jazz” outfit Brazz Vilidj.

The March 8 programme has Metaformoza (funk and jazz), the Romaneno Project (“the best Roma musicians meet the best jazz musicians in Bulgaria and the result is the Romaneno Project”, according to the group’s Facebook page) and, from France, the Funky Style Brass, known for its showmanship and costuming as much as for its music.

The programme starts each day at 9pm. Tickets are 25 a night or 40 leva for a festival ticket. Tickets via ticketplus.bg or ticketportal.bg.

Organisers said that the event is open only to those over the age of 18.
