New ‘code yellow’ weather alert in Bulgaria over foggy conditions

A new ‘code yellow’ weather warning was issued for most of Bulgaria by the country’s meteorology institute on January 9 because of the thick fog. In total, 17 districts were affected by the weather alert.

These areas affected were Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Pleven, Veliko Turnovo, Rousse, Silistra, Yambol, Sliven, Stara Zagora, Haskovo, Kurdjali, Plovdiv, Blagoevgrad, Kyustendil, Pernik and the city of Sofia.

Fog has blanketed large swathes of the country in the first days of 2014, with more expected in the coming days. Visibility in areas affected by the fog ranged from 50m to 150m, according to reports in Bulgarian media.

Motorists were advised to take extra precaution and drive slower because of low visibility and wet surfaces.
