Belarusian activist Bialiatski wins Václav Havel Award

The first Václav Havel Human Rights Prize, which honours outstanding civil society action in defense of human rights, was awarded on September 30 2013 to Belarusian human rights activist Ales Bialiatski in Strasbourg.

Although Bialiatski is currently serving a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence, the 60 000 euro (1.5 million Kc) prize was presented to his wife, Natallia Pinchuk, in a ceremony at the Palais de l’Europe on the opening day of the autumn plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
